Patrick Mahomes Makes History With Third Super Bowl MVP Win

LAS VEGAS — Immediately following his decisive performance in overtime, Patrick Mahomes clinched the Super Bowl MVP title on Sunday night.

Mahomes showcased his exceptional skill by throwing for 333 yards and rushing for an additional 66, guiding the Kansas City Chiefs to a thrilling 25-22 triumph over the San Francisco 49ers. This victory marks the Chiefs’ second consecutive Super Bowl win and their third in the last five years. Mahomes has now secured the MVP accolade in each of these triumphant seasons.

Reflecting on his achievement during a post-game interview on CBS, Mahomes expressed his immense pride in his team, emphasizing the significance of clinching a third title. “It means a ton,” he remarked after delivering the winning touchdown pass. “I’m proud of my guys, man, this is awesome. It’s legendary.”

Maintaining his undefeated streak at Allegiant Stadium, where he has previously defeated the Las Vegas Raiders four times since its inauguration in 2020, Mahomes’ performance in this game was undoubtedly the most remarkable. His final throw of the game resulted in only the second overtime game in Super Bowl history. Additionally, Mahomes now shares the second-most Super Bowl MVP awards with Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana, trailing only Tom Brady by two.

With just 1:53 remaining in regulation and the Chiefs trailing 19-16, Mahomes showcased his trademark resilience. Leading Kansas City on an 11-play, 64-yard drive, he orchestrated a game-tying Harrison Butker 29-yard field goal with just three seconds left on the clock.

Following the 49ers’ opening drive in overtime, which gave them a brief 22-19 lead, Mahomes once again rose to the occasion. He engineered a 75-yard drive over 13 plays, culminating in a 3-yard touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman Jr. with a mere three seconds left in the first quarter of overtime. Praising Hardman’s perseverance throughout the season, Mahomes described him as “special.”

During the final drive, Mahomes also demonstrated his versatility by rushing for 27 yards on two critical plays, converting on fourth-and-1 and third-and-1 situations.

By completing 34 of 46 attempts with a 99.3 passer rating, Mahomes capped off an impressive playoff run that included victories over the Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, and Baltimore Ravens before triumphing over the 49ers.

Addressing the ecstatic crowd from the podium while clutching the Lombardi Trophy, Mahomes eagerly anticipated the celebratory parade in Kansas City. “Kansas City, I’ll see you at the parade,” he declared. “Let’s do it, baby.”
